recreational ice skating

ISI’s inaugural Theatrical Challenge was held Oct. 6 at the historic Ice Chalet in Knoxville, Tenn. This event was conceived to give participants a full show skating experience. It was limited to non-technical events, such as Artistic, Ensemble, Footwork, Kaleidoskate, Pattern, Rhythmic, Spotlights (both solo and couples) and Small Production.

The ice was configured into a three-side show set with the judges on one side and the audience on the other and in bleachers on the end with the main curtain opposite end.

“Decked out in full theater seating and lighting, the rink was perfectly prepared for the event,” said ISI Skating Programs & National Events Director Kim Hansen. “Each skater was announced and took the ice through a beautiful full-size curtain. They got to experience real show lighting that included multiple spotlights and gave them the true star experience. Before the day was over, even an ensemble of moms had gotten their chance at being the stars of their show. And the kids loved it!”

Participating teams hailed from seven states — Alabama, Connecticut, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio and Tennessee — and the host rink earned the Overall Team Champion title.

The Ice Chalet, a 50-plus year ISI-member rink, has been the host of the ProSkaters Performance Camp and Auditions since 2013. This is a remarkable event in which skaters from across the country are offered an educational and networking opportunity within the show skating community. They not only receive valuable feedback from the many show producers in attendance but they also audition for potential roles.

Many thanks to the Ice Chalet staff and all of the volunteers for their hard work and dedication to make the 2018 Theatrical Challenge a success!
